Mr. Baker was born November 5, 1941 in Lancaster County, a son of the late Wendell Strait Baker and Sarah Gibson Baker. He retired from Bowater after many years and then worked at Second Baptist Church, where he was a member, as a custodian for a number of years until he finally retired in 2015. He loved to be around people and made many great friends along the way because of his helpful servant's heart to all. He also served our great country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Wayne spent his entire 61 years of marriage ensuring the love of his life, Jean, was taken care of, especially in these latter years. While never a sports fanatic himself, he and Jean always attended most every ballgame that his children and grandchildren participated in. Whether it was local or many miles away they would make every effort to be there. In the last few years, Wayne and Jean enjoyed many visits from their great grandchildren and it was always one of the highlights of their week. There was never a doubt how much he loved his family and it was one of his greatest pleasures to take care of them in many different fashions.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife Jean Brazzell Baker, a daughter Pam Baker Gilmore and husband Clint, a son Eric Wayne Baker and wife Anna Cauthen Baker, 4 Grandchildren, Ty Gilmore, Allison Beckham, Madeleine Baker, and Caiden Baker, 5 Great-Grandchildren, Wyatt, Maddox, Aria, Leia, and Sage, as well as a sister, Elizabeth Blackwell.
Mr. Baker is preceded in death by a brother, Gibson Baker, and sister, Evelyn Baker. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to All For One Church (Children's Ministry) in honor of his great grandchildren at 418 Monroe Highway, Lancaster, S.C. 29720; or the American Diabetes Association.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the caregivers, staff and nurses that cared for Wayne over the last few years but especially to a special caregiver, Nancy Rushing. They would also like to say a special thank you to Dr William Harris of Carolina Podiatry who diligently cared for dad the last few years which allowed him to have a few more years with his family.
Funeral Services for Mr. Wayne Baker are being Directed by Jerry Hartley Funeral Home, 684 Hubbard Drive 803-285-8000 in Lancaster, S.C.
