Marisa Irma Barnes
February 9, 1947 - October 31, 2024
FORT MILL, S.C. We mourn the passing of Marisa Barnes (née Scioli) and join in celebrating her wonderful life. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Italian immigrants Hugo and Theresa Scioli (née Galizia), she grew up and spent the majority of her life on 3rd Street. She is survived by her children, Evan Edgar (partner Claire Bini), Keith Oliver and Noël Térèse (partner Kevin Kendall), granddaughter Amelia Elizabeth and sister Anne Marie Petriano.
Marisa attended St. Angela Hall Academy (Brooklyn) and received a degree from secretarial school. As a secretary, she worked at Eastern Airlines, Solomon Brothers, Bache, St. John's Episcopal Church and NY Methodist Hospital. It was at Methodist that she would shine firstly as a secretary then a Housing Coordinator and finally, Director of Facilities Management.
After her divorce, she raised her three children alone, the prototypical strong woman decades before it was in vogue. She persevered through adversity and overcame many obstacles, moving to South Carolina at 70 years of age and embracing her new Southern life.
Many will recall Marisa's unique and wonderful sense of humor, her caring demeanor, unfiltered opinions and zest for life. She loved cooking, decorating, traveling to dozens of countries, music, opera, children, shopping and most of all her family. She was known by many names: Mom, Aunt Risi, and later Grandma Sisi, which would be her proudest title.
Marisa will be missed tremendously. In remembrance, she would want laughter, joy and banter regarding a well lived life. We ask in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude's Hospital or the Special Olympics.
A further celebration of Marisa will be held at Dooley Funeral Home in Westfield, NJ on Friday, November 15th between 2PM and 5PM, with a get together following where all are invited.
We love you forever, Mom. May God bless you as you find your way to paradise where you will revel as the guest of honor at a great soirèe in heaven with all who went before. We will meet again.
Requiescat in Pace.
