In Loving Memory of Richard Elmer Belk
September 14, 1939 – October 23, 2026
He served his country, worked hard, built things with his hands, filled his home with good food and laughter, and gave his family the gift of a steady, loving presence.
Richard Elmer Belk, of Lancaster, South Carolina, lived a life defined by love, quiet strength, and dedication to his family. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather who found his greatest joy not in grand gestures, but in the everyday moments and small acts of service that made life better for the people he loved.
Richard shared 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Judy. Together, they built a family and a lifetime of memories. His love was steady and dependable, shown in all the big and little ways he cared for his family.
Richard served his country in the military for 12 years, including two assignments in Germany. Those years overseas became a special part of his family's story, as both of his sons were born while he was stationed there. After completing his military service, Richard began a second career as an IT systems analyst, working until his retirement.
Outside of work, Richard enjoyed fishing and woodworking, hobbies that suited his patient nature and appreciation for creating things with his hands. Whether he was working on a project in his workshop or preparing a meal for those he loved, he took pleasure in doing things that brought comfort and happiness to others.
At home, Richard was often the calm, happy presence in a family full of talkers. He had a way of bringing a sense of peace to the room, offering a steady and positive influence simply by being himself. His warmth, gentle spirit, and quiet dependability spoke for him, and his family knew they could count on him.
Richard was a dedicated father to Wayne Belk and his wife, Almarah; Michael Belk and his wife, Jennifer; and Rhonda Painter and her husband, Jeromy. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan Belk, Lauren Belk, Julia Belk, Austin Taylor and Caleb Taylor. Being there for his children and grandchildren was one of the great purposes and pleasures of his life, and his love was felt in countless ways, both ordinary and extraordinary.
He is also survived by his brother, Max Belk.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Austin Taylor, as well as his brothers Crawford, Billy, Lathan and Dean and sisters Mazie and Dorothy.
Richard will be deeply missed and forever loved by the family he cherished so dearly. He served his country, worked hard, built things with his hands, filled his home with good food and laughter, and gave his family the gift of a steady, loving presence. These are the things his family will carry with them, along with the memories of his smile, his kindness, and the simple pleasure of having him near.
